INTERNET WORDS - part one |

ADSL: Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. An ADSL
line is a form of broadband internet, where the upload speed is different from
the download speed. ADSL provides you with a faster internet connection.
Bandwidth: A way of measuring how much information you can send through a
connection. Some hosting companies allow their customers 4Gigabytes of bandwidth
each month - each time someone downloads their website they are using some of
their bandwidth. Browser: A piece of software run on the client PC
such as Internet Explorer or Netscape which enables the user to view internet
web pages etc. Cookie: Not a biscuit! Commonly a cookie is a piece
of information sent from a web server to a web browser, which the browser saves
and sends back to the server when the browser makes further requests to the web
server. Common information stored in a cookie can be: login information, virtual
shopping cart, user preferences etc. Domain Name: A unique name that
identifies a website. Eg. www.creative-communication.biz . A domain name generally
comes in two parts; the name . the ending (TLD). It is recommended to have a domain
name which is easy to remember and as similar as possible to your business name.
FAQ: Short for frequently asked questions. FTP: File Transfer
Protocol. This is generally used to publish web pages on the internet. It allows
a connection from a PC to a web server. GIF: A commonly used format
for web graphics. Hosting: A service which enables your website to
be on the internet. You maybe asked who hosts your website or which hosting company
do you use. A hosting company can provide you with a server or virtual server
on which your website is stored. When someone visits your website the details
are sent from this server. HTML: Hypertext Markup Language. A common
coding language used for building websites. Intranet: A private network
inside an organisation which is similar to that of the internet. It can be used
to publish documents etc on a website which is only accessible internally.
IP Number: A unique 4 part number that is allocated to every machine
on the internet. ISP: An organisation that provides access to the
internet. EG: AOL, Tiscali, Zen Internet... JAVA: Network friendly
programming language invented by Sun Microsystems. JavaScript: A
programming language that is mostly used on website to add features that make
the web page more interactive. JPEG: Another commonly used image
format which is good for saving photographic files. Metatag: A metatag
contains information about a web page although it is not visible on the website
only in the source code. A while ago, search engines would rely heavily on metatags
to rank web pages. Modem: A device that connects a computer to a
